The Bookplace Mono is currently available for ¥9800 (around $100) as a special launch price, bundled with some books. The price will climb to ¥13,500 (around $150) soon.

I just had my first experience with the Toshiba Book Place (and a Toshiba laptop) yesterday. I am so NOT impressed. There are multiple comments on the Toshiba community boards about how Toshiba 'help' is unresponsive to issues - both about the hardware and the Book Place. Given the number of hoops I had to jump through in order to get a free copy of Windows 8 for Dummies, and the massively inflated prices I saw listed on books ($4-5 above list prices for ebooks elsewhere), I would not go anywhere near this device.
